5G for self-driving (automated) cars

IDEA

Idea is to use 5G for the whole spectrum of media and protocols for the Industry of Connected Cars.

Usage of 5G for self-driving cars opens new horizons for implementation of this idea into the real life. In fact, due to properties of 5G network we have the following benefits:

  • Reduced over-the-air latency (10ms -> 1ms) allowing to implement real-time driving management, including sophisticated Artificial Intelligence (based on Server/Cloud) prevention of car accidents. Meantime, local server in each car can be more simple and cheap then.
  • More simultaneous connections (100,000/km2 -> 1 million/km2) allowing to control multiple devices within one car over same 5G network. These devices are various counters, engines, relays for different area of control inside the connected car - proximity radars, driving controllers, components status controllers and so on. Along with that, all road elements for connected cars (IoT semafor, IoT speed limit signs) can be done also with connection over 5G, as we have enough simultaneous connections.
  • Enhanced mobility (350km/h -> 500km/h)will open a way to new business of dedicated lanes for automated trucks or automated trains with speed over 350km/h.
  • User experience data rate (10~100Mbps -> 100Mbps~1Gbps) will allow to implement Augmented Reality with reach content for combined cars - i.e. half-automated cars with human driver inside. For example, it can be drawing the landscape in real-time on the whole front glass in bad driving conditions like fog or heavy rain.

Finally, usage of 5G significally will reduce CAPEX and OPEX for connected car solutions.

  • We do not need a zoo of media and different modems with different antennas.
  • We use common chipsets as in 5G smartphones and tablets.
  • We can hire as Support general telecom engineers - more flexibility and convenience for business.

In fact, 5G itself will become a commodity quite soon and what really worth is quality of service and software. If someone will select zoo of technologies for connected car solution, then this one will face all the problems of small market of expensive dedicated hardware.

SUPPORT

Supporting hardware/software: IoT (Connected Car).

Solution type: Service, meaning that there have to be developed the whole system, including software and separate devices.

  • Devices, however to be developed by present 3rd party companies, which deal with car automation, but with usage of 5G chipsets.
  • Regarding the software, along with creation or modification of dedicated OSS/BSS server software, significant development of in-car software has to be done. At least testing of all-in-one 5G connection with different latency and bitrate for different content - has to be done.

BUSINESS

Segment: B2B, considering that the solution (software, patents and hardware specifications) will be sold or provided in lease to car companies (TESLA, APPLE and classic car companies), to transport companies (like UBER or MAERSK). As alternative ovner of the solution can outsource cars and IoT devices production and became B2C player itself.

Potential revenue generation: Depending on the selected business model (sell to, lease to or become B2C) solution owner can have completely different revenues. However, gross estimation of the business is at least reaching the capitalization of tens of billions (from capitalization of TESLA to capitalization of GOOGLE).
