All-in-One wireless box

IDEA

As we have good enough access speed on HSPA and WiMAX, even at now days, then there is an issue to think about “heavy” broadband applications. What if we have on the market some device, which is looks like WiFi router, but equipped with all possible interfaces and applications?

For example, there can be TV-out, HDMI/HDTV-out, analogue phone-line plug (RJ11), LAN plug (RJ45), some service interfaces like USB or RS-432 for infrastructure or security applications, then of course radio interface – WiFi (no doubts it must be), maybe WCDMA to have FemtoCell functionality, quite possible that ZigBee can be useful for wireless applications in infrastructure or security.

Why? There are lot of PRO, compare to CONTRA.

· In some country-side can be quite weak coverage of TV signal. Sometimes the signal is ok, sometimes is not too good. Therefore many people will consider to have firm alternative (which locally placed NodeBs are) for quality. May be for some additional service too – like on-line shopping, on-line TV programs list, IPTV in addition to regular TV channels and so on.

· Many users are happy enough with 5-10 Mbit/s access, so they agree to have home line network (LAN) with mentioned limitations. Meantime to supply underground cables can be less effective, than HSPA (or WiMAX) radio access.

· Same cost effectiveness reasons can turn commercially successful such services as analogue phone or fax connection.

· Home Security & Maintenance infrastructure can use same cost effectiveness.

You don’t believe it can be true? HSPA (WiMAX) never go same price as wireline? It’s true for a while, however for some cases like villages which are far away or in mountains it already can be same cost. As chips for HSPA, WiMAX (and LTE in the future) more and more being mass marketed, then we have negligible cost. Then we have an issue with limitations of Radio Frequencies. But, there is one solution which can make life easier!

TECHNICAL & ADMINISTRATIVE

This solution was very popular in CDMAone standard and this is WLL – Wireless Local Loop. So, if you don’t know the benefits for this solution, let me briefly introduce main items:

· No Handover is possible – means that no Location Update or Handover Requests are managed by network, resulting more simple solution, more simple management, very low signaling traffic, compare to Mobile Network.

· More predictable subscribers’ behavior – stable subscribers quantity in the exact cell, more less stable daily schedule of active usage for services.

o It means that in the house No. 1001 (for example) lives manager and his typical activity is looks like this – check e-mails and read news at morning (medium traffic), then only home security activity (low traffic) until 8 p.m., then internet browsing till 10 p.m. and watching TV till 12 p.m. (high traffic). In the house No. 1002 lives freelancer, and he has the following activity – 11 a.m. – wake up and turn on Internet-radio (medium traffic), 1 p.m. - starts working (medium traffic), then 7 to 8 p.m. upload results and creating network back-up (high traffic), then 8 to 11 p.m. – go to bar (no traffic), then 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. – watching video in the Internet (high traffic). So, somewhere in the house No 1003 living housewife, in the house No. 1004 lives the family of pensioners. And so on. All this allowing more correct network planning and provides proper stable all-day network load.

· No roamers and no roaming agreements. So, there are no surprises in the network operations. Meantime it’s possible to reduce costs in OPEX.

In result the operator can have cost reduction by 30-60%, compare to Mobile Network deployment on the same area, so it means that price can be reduced with same percentage. Along with further going new technologies to wider mass market, we came to situation when price is appropriate for most of the users.

VALUE

The idea is quite simple, as you may see. But it can brings enough benefits for the Mobile Operators.

· It’s constantly paying Packet traffic.

· It’s easy way to offer Fixed-Mobile Convergent (FMC) services. Easy is related to both – technical and administrative sides of the question.

· It’s extra money for extra services like VPN subscription for Security system (+1 to +2 USD to ARPU) or percentage fee for the transactions on IPTV, and so on.

· It even can be a business with zero profit, but serving for loyalty of Mobile Subscribers and their loyalty to spends for expensive Mobile Services.

RESUME

So, it must be lead by operators, as they have most of benefits. Lead – I mean that placing gross orders or even participation in devices design. Then must be good marketing promotion, may be even up to zero price for the device, by introducing 1-2 year(s) contract.

v

Then the key point is that TOP10 operators go to Asian manufacturers and start these negotiations. Meantime there is still a business for Core Network vendors (triple-play solutions and so on) and for System Integrators (as there supposed to be simple standardized installations in many small towns and villages).

Everybody agrees that it’s a very good idea, isn’t it? )))
