Distributed Power Supply Network for supply your Telecom Equipment

The CASE

Idea is to use renewable energy sources: Winds, Sun, Water.

Task is that these sources are supplying your network 365 days a year: Mix of technologies and sources, together with geographical distribution.

Implementation in telecommunication industry, as it’s seems to be best fit industry: Geographically distributed sites and moderate power consumption per one site.

Let’s have a look on each point in details!

Renewable energy sources

It’s good to use the fact, that in the frame of big area like 1/10 to 1/2 partition of the Continent, we always have the wind blowing, the Sun shining and the Water streams (rivers, ebb and flow). Some parts of the world have different major sources, but it’s always possible to use all mentioned ones if we consider big country or group of countries.

In Africa, Asia, Australia and North America we have a lot of the Sun and seasonal winds. There is some local rivers and seashore also.

In Europe we have a lot of seasonal winds and many mountain rivers. Meantime it’s possible to use solar energy for half a day, if consider entire South of Europe.

In South America we have good mix of all mentioned renewable sources.

You will see that weak winds and small regional rivers are important enough for the Case, as typical power consumption per site will be just 3-5 KWh. Meantime we go to next point, which will reveal the way for permanent supply.

Energy supply 365 days a year

Main idea is to use mix of all possible sources. So, during the sunny day we use solar energy, if there is cloudy day, then we use winds, if it’s a rainy day we use water streams.

Meantime there can be done some tricks, which are being more obvious when we start to examine bigger area. Let’s have a look on each trick separately, but keep in mind that these are also can use benefits of mix with each other.

1. For example, there is approximate data, that on the North of Europe are strong South-East winds, which are blow from February to March. Then there are strong winds in Easter Europe from April to May. Then again in North Europe are North-West winds from June till September. Finally we have strong North winds on the South of Europe, which blows from October till December. In result we have the Wind round a year, if energy network is developed on entire Europe.

2. Meantime in Europe we can use water streams in the same manner – during winter time there are big waves in South Europe shores, when ebb and flow. During spring time there are flows of mountain rivers. During summer time there are flows of regular rivers. Finally, during autumn there are ebb and flow together with warm oceanic steams on North of Europe.

3. Another good example is Russia. Here we can consider solar energy. Here we have a delta in 12 hours among most Eastern point and most Western point of the country. So, briefly it means that solar energy can be used 24 hours a day! Same condition – energy network is deployed on the whole country wide.

Best fit industry

Then we have a final step in determining the industry, which may be the driver of green energy technologies. It’s quite important, because of some economical points.

· Overall power output generated by such continent wide network is not a major, considering present level of power consumption. If we start thinking about big cities with Mega Watt consumption just per one sky-scraper or Chemical Industry where just one product line consumes Giga Watts, then we may start thinking that this project is just a non-profit headache.

· Meantime, there is another question – is it worthy to use energy of small mountain river or set-up just 50-100 solar batteries on a highest hill around? Overall outcome of such units is just 10 or 20 KWh. Nothing interested may be? May be- Yes, but it will be quite worthy if we have important (strategic) consumption units, which are typically consume 3-5 KWh per site.

· There is a good cost reduction, if directly produced energy goes just in some near places. Yes, there can be some centralized capacitor, but al least end-user connection can be done locally. So, power consumption units have to be distributed around the examined region (country, group of countries, continent).

Right after we have summarized all the information above, we can see that Mobile Telecommunications (cellular networks in particular) is the perfect industry for implementation of this green technology! In fact, look at the facts below:

· Base stations are distributed around entire area – far villages, roads, boundaries, resort places and so on.

· Power consumption of one Base Station is typically varying from 3 to 5 KWh.

· Relation of overall output compares to overall consumption gives 1 to 1, approximately. Yes, there possible that some part of energy is redundant or contrary there possible that sometimes we have to supply from centralized network. But (!) it’s the best alternative compare to other variants. For example – if we are going to supply chemical or heavy industry, then produced power is almost nothing, along with obvious losses due to transportation of energy to several centralized points (big plants).

Who is the developer?

So… it’s possible to consider different variants. I believe that most important to show all them and demonstrate possibilities. Final decision or conclusions I left up to you!

1) Another/Alternative Power Company. This seems quite logical, as Power Company is the best point of authority, who knows everything about power distribution, power management, necessary documentation and so on. End-Users can’t get same cost benefits, as if deploy themselves, but there is at least cheaper energy and good value for the Nature.

2) Telecom Operator himself can arrange such network. For the sure, that most components will be purchased from 3rd parties, but own network gives more benefits. Alternative solution – operator outsource the network from the Power Company mentioned above.

3) Can be Telecom and IT suppliers of such equipment like rectifiers, batteries, air-con and so on. Good options is that these guys know enough about electricity (from one side) and already have good relationships with operators (from another side). In result there is an opportunity to run trials or zonal projects, before entire network is implemented.

4) Finally, there can be Vendors of Telecom Equipment. Main reason – operators just buy one more solution from Vendors for their telecom network. Why not?! Another point is that most Telecom Vendors have or had relation to Power Solutions. Siemens, for example, have huge business in enterprise automation, including applications for heavy industries. Alcatel and Nokia had in the past big business related to cooper cables, electricity accessories and so on. Emerson is a company which was part of Ericsson. Meantime, there is a lot of buzz about green technologies, among of Telecom Vendors.

RESUME

Finally it’s obvious that such distributed power networks, which implementing renewable energy sources, should be put into life! I sure that no one has doubts it true!

What this article is about, that if we choose a proper power consumption end-user for the first stages of the project, then we have success and spread development in the future.

At my sight – Mobile Telecommunications is the best end-user! They are growing up and help to grow up green power technologies.
